McClellan’s Retreat is an excellent cocktail bar located at 2031 Florida Ave NW. It is my favorite (permanent) bar in DC for a classy cocktail (The Green Zone being my favorite pop-up bar for a cocktail). McClellan’s Retreat is Civil War-themed (hence the name, named after General McClellan and a bit punny) but the decor isn’t kitschy at all. It’s actually a very atmospheric place that tends to attract an older, more professional crowd. Basically, it’s not Shenanigans in Adams Morgan and it’s not a place to spend a wild night out. What it’s perfect for is a delicious and somewhat pricey
(but worth it) cocktail with a friend, co-worker or date. They have a large selection of rye and bourbon, and as such, their cocktails are largely whiskey-based. A personal favorite that has been on the menu in the past (though I didn’t see it last time I was there) is a whisky-based cocktail called the Barren Hill. I’m sure they can still make it on request. I blame McClellan’s Retreat for my current fondness for whiskey-based cocktails; they totally got me hooked. Last time I went, I ordered the “Pepperbox,” which is made with Peloton Mezcal, Lucano Coffee, and Chocolate Mint Syrup served over Habanero Ice. It was excellent. They also serve some classy snacks, including a great cheese plate.
