Irish Whiskey Public House is an Irish pub with (you guessed it) an extensive Irish whiskey selection located at 1207 19th St NW. I went with a group of friends to celebrate the feast day of Saint Brigid, an Irish saint who is partially known for a prayer attributed to her about a lake of beer in heaven (we were definitely the only people in the bar aware that it was Saint Brigid’s Day, but who cares). Here’s an excerpt of the prayer:
“I’d like to give a lake of beer to God. …
I’d sit with the men, the women and God
There by the lake of beer.
We’d be drinking good health forever
And every drop would be a prayer.”
It seemed appropriate to order a couple of drinks to celebrate Saint Brigid, so I had a Guinness and a Guinness and champagne cocktail called the “Black Velvet.” It’s 2/3 of a glass of cheap champagne (barely better than André) topped with Guinness. It sounds disgusting but, shockingly, is crisp and delicious (like a dry hard cider, though it still looks like Guinness). They also have a half price burger
night on Mondays, where their tasty house burgers are only $6.50 rather than $13. This is a pretty good deal and it’s worth going for an early dinner to combine it with their happy hour, where beers (sadly not including Guinness) are $5 before 7 pm. Irish whiskey has an atmospheric, cozy interior, friendly staff and a dangerous brunch special where bottles of champagne (I assume California champagne, not the real stuff) are only $1 with a $10 food purchase.
